Degu Bonding

Bonding with a degu is a gradual process that requires patience, consistency, and understanding of their social nature. Degus are naturally curious and social animals, but they can be wary of humans at first. To build trust, it’s important to start by offering them treats from your hand and spending time near their cage to allow them to become familiar with your presence. Gentle, calm movements are key, as sudden actions can startle them. Over time, your degu will begin to associate you with positive experiences and feel more comfortable around you.

Once your degu begins to trust you, handling can become a more regular part of your interaction. Always support their body properly and avoid grabbing them from above, as this can trigger their instinctive fear of predators. Letting them climb onto your hand voluntarily is a good way to respect their comfort zone. Playtime outside the cage, in a safe, enclosed space, also helps strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Remember, bonding with a degu is a process that can take weeks or even months, but the reward is a trusting, affectionate relationship with a lively and intelligent companion.
