Degu Cage Setup

Setting up the perfect cage for your degu is essential to ensure their well-being and happiness. Degus are active and intelligent animals, so their cage should be large enough to provide plenty of space for exercise and mental stimulation. A multi-level cage with solid floors is ideal, as it gives them room to climb and explore. Avoid wire mesh floors, which can hurt their sensitive feet. The cage should also have a solid base with a good layer of substrate, such as paper-based bedding or aspen shavings, to allow for burrowing and absorbing moisture. Degus love to dig and build nests, so providing them with plenty of bedding material is essential.

In addition to space, enrichment is key to keeping degus happy. Provide a variety of toys, tunnels, and chewable items, such as wooden blocks or safe branches, to keep their teeth healthy and minds occupied. A running wheel, at least 12 inches in diameter, is also necessary for their physical exercise. Don’t forget to include a dust bath, as degus need to regularly clean their fur this way. Fresh water, food dishes, and hiding places are also must-haves. The right setup, along with regular interaction and care, ensures that your degus will thrive in their environment.
