Degu Care

Degus are social, intelligent rodents that make wonderful pets if cared for properly. Native to Chile, they require a habitat that mimics their natural environment. A large cage with multiple levels, a solid floor, and plenty of space for climbing and burrowing is essential. Wire mesh flooring should be avoided as it can harm their feet. Inside the cage, provide plenty of hay, tunnels, and chew toys to keep them mentally stimulated and physically active.

Diet is another critical aspect of degu care. Degus are herbivores, and their primary diet should consist of high-quality hay, such as timothy or meadow hay. Fresh vegetables like leafy greens can be offered daily, but avoid high-sugar foods, including fruits and certain vegetables like carrots, as degus are prone to diabetes. Fresh water should always be available, and a dust bath should be provided weekly to keep their fur clean and healthy.

In addition to their physical needs, degus require plenty of social interaction. They are highly social creatures and should be kept in pairs or groups to prevent loneliness. Regular handling will help them become accustomed to humans, but be gentle, as degus can be delicate. By meeting their needs for space, diet, and socialization, you can ensure your degus lead a happy, healthy life.
