Degu Diet

A proper diet is essential for keeping degus healthy and happy. Degus are herbivores, meaning their diet should primarily consist of plant-based foods. High-quality hay, such as timothy or meadow hay, should make up the bulk of their diet. Hay is not only a great source of fiber, but it also helps wear down their continuously growing teeth. Fresh vegetables like leafy greens (e.g., spinach, kale, or dandelion greens) should be offered daily to provide essential vitamins and minerals. However, avoid starchy vegetables like carrots and potatoes, as they contain too much sugar for degus.

Pelleted food specifically designed for degus can be a good supplement to their hay and vegetables, but be cautious to choose a pellet that does not contain added sugars or fruit. Degus are highly susceptible to diabetes, so avoiding sugary foods, including fruits, is crucial. Always ensure that fresh water is available, either in a bottle or a dish, and that they have access to safe chewing materials, such as untreated wood or mineral blocks, to promote dental health. By providing a well-balanced, low-sugar diet, you can help your degu live a long, healthy life free from common health issues like obesity and diabetes.
