Degu Exercise

Exercise is essential for a degu’s health, as it helps prevent obesity, promotes mental well-being, and supports their natural instincts to explore and be active. In captivity, it is important to provide degus with plenty of opportunities for physical activity to mimic the stimulation they would experience in the wild. A large, multi-level cage is ideal, allowing them to climb, jump, and move freely. Adding ramps, platforms, and tunnels encourages movement and exploration within their living space.

A running wheel is another excellent way to provide regular exercise for degus. Make sure to choose a solid wheel with no gaps to prevent injuries, as degus can run quite fast. In addition to exercise inside the cage, offering daily supervised time outside the cage can greatly enhance their physical activity. Setting up a safe, enclosed play area with tunnels, toys, and obstacles gives degus more space to run, explore, and interact with their environment. By ensuring your degus have ample space and varied ways to exercise, you will contribute to their overall well-being and keep them both physically and mentally healthy.
