Degu Grooming

Degus are naturally clean animals, and they engage in regular grooming behaviors to keep their fur in good condition. Unlike some other small mammals, degus do not require regular baths with water. In fact, water can be harmful to them, as their fur is not designed to dry quickly and can lead to skin issues or illness. Instead, degus keep their coats clean through the use of dust baths. Providing a dust bath with specially formulated chinchilla dust allows them to roll around, which helps absorb oils and remove dirt from their fur. Dust baths should be offered at least once or twice a week, depending on the humidity and cleanliness of the degu’s environment.

Aside from their fur, degus also take care of their teeth by chewing on appropriate materials like untreated wood, hay, or mineral blocks. This is an important part of their grooming routine, as their teeth grow continuously and need to be worn down. You should regularly check their claws as well, although they usually wear them down naturally by digging and climbing. If their claws become too long, they may need gentle trimming by a vet or an experienced pet owner. By providing regular dust baths, appropriate chewing materials, and occasional claw care, you can ensure that your degu remains clean, healthy, and comfortable.
