Guinea Pig Care

Caring for a guinea pig requires attention to their basic needs, including diet, habitat, grooming, and social interaction. Guinea pigs thrive on a diet rich in fresh hay, which should make up the bulk of their nutrition. Timothy hay is an excellent choice as it helps maintain digestive health and keeps their teeth, which grow continuously, in check. In addition to hay, guinea pigs should be fed fresh vegetables like leafy greens and peppers, which are rich in vitamin C. Because guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C, this nutrient is essential for preventing health issues like scurvy. Pellets formulated for guinea pigs can also be provided, but these should not replace fresh food.

In addition to diet, guinea pigs need a clean, spacious environment with plenty of bedding for comfort and a variety of hiding spots and toys to keep them mentally stimulated. Regular cage cleaning is important for maintaining hygiene and preventing odors. Guinea pigs are social animals and do best when housed with other guinea pigs, but it’s essential to introduce them properly to avoid conflicts. Lastly, grooming your guinea pig involves occasional brushing, especially for long-haired breeds, and monitoring their nails, which need regular trimming. By providing proper care, guinea pigs can live happy, healthy lives for up to 6-8 years.
