Hiking Safety for Dogs

Keeping your dog safe on the trail should always be your top priority. First and foremost, know the trail conditions. Some hikes might have steep drop-offs, fast-running water, or loose rocks that can be dangerous for dogs. Always keep your dog on a leash if you’re unsure about the safety of the terrain. It’s also crucial to bring plenty of water, as dehydration is a serious risk, especially on hot days.

Wildlife encounters are another concern. While most animals will avoid humans, your dog might be tempted to chase them. Keeping your dog close and under control can prevent dangerous encounters with wild animals such as snakes, bears, or even aggressive smaller creatures like raccoons. Additionally, make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, especially for diseases like Lyme disease, which can be transmitted by ticks that are common on hiking trails. By preparing for these risks, you can hike confidently, knowing your dog is safe.
