Neon Tetra aquarium setup

Setting up an aquarium for neon tetras requires careful planning to create a healthy and vibrant environment for these colorful fish. Neon tetras are small, peaceful fish, best kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals. A 10-gallon tank is the minimum size for a small group, though larger tanks are always better, as they provide more swimming space and help maintain water stability. Neon tetras thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and the temperature should range from 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C).

Creating a natural, planted tank with subdued lighting mimics their natural habitat, the slow-moving rivers of South America. Live plants such as Java moss, Anubias, or Amazon swords provide shelter and security, helping to reduce stress in neon tetras. It is also important to use a gentle filtration system, as neon tetras prefer calm water. Regular water changes and maintaining good water quality are crucial to their well-being. Feeding neon tetras is relatively simple, as they readily accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and the occasional live or frozen food like brine shrimp or daphnia to keep them healthy and vibrant.
