Neon Tetra fishkeeping

Neon tetra fishkeeping is a rewarding experience for both beginners and experienced aquarists due to the species’ peaceful nature, vibrant colors, and relative ease of care. These small, brightly colored fish are best kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals, as they are schooling fish that feel more secure in numbers. A 10-gallon tank is the minimum recommended size for a small school, but larger tanks offer more stability and space for the tetras to swim. Neon tetras thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 and a temperature between 72°F and 78°F (22°C to 26°C). Keeping these parameters stable is crucial to their well-being, and regular water changes are needed to maintain good water quality.

In addition to water conditions, the tank environment plays a significant role in the health and behavior of neon tetras. A well-planted aquarium with live plants such as Java moss, Anubias, or Amazon swords provides hiding places and mimics their natural habitat, helping reduce stress. Neon tetras also prefer subdued lighting, which enhances their colors and keeps them comfortable. When choosing tankmates, it’s important to select other small, peaceful species, such as Corydoras catfish or other small tetras, to avoid aggression. Neon tetras have simple dietary needs and do well on a balanced diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented occasionally with live or frozen treats like brine shrimp or daphnia. With the right care, neon tetras can live up to five years, bringing beauty and tranquility to your aquarium.
