Neon Tetra tank mates

Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) are peaceful, schooling fish that do well with a variety of tank mates, making them a popular choice for community aquariums. Due to their small size and calm nature, it’s important to pair them with other peaceful species that won’t see them as prey or outcompete them for food. Ideal tank mates include small, non-aggressive fish such as other species of tetras (like Cardinal Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras), guppies, mollies, and peaceful bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras catfish and small loaches. These species share similar water conditions and temperaments, ensuring a harmonious tank environment.

Avoid keeping Neon Tetras with larger or more aggressive fish like cichlids, barbs, or large gouramis, as they can easily stress or even prey on the tetras. It’s also a good idea to keep Neon Tetras in groups of at least six, as they are schooling fish that feel more secure and exhibit natural behaviors when in larger numbers. Ensuring a stable water temperature, slightly acidic to neutral pH, and plenty of hiding spaces, such as live plants, will help all tank inhabitants thrive. When choosing tank mates, always consider the size, temperament, and environmental needs of the species to create a balanced and peaceful aquarium.
