Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) are popular freshwater fish known for their vibrant colors and peaceful nature, making them a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. To keep Neon Tetras healthy and happy, there are a few important tips to keep in mind. First, they thrive in groups, so it’s best to keep at least six to eight Neon Tetras together to encourage their natural schooling behavior. A larger group not only helps reduce stress but also makes the fish feel more secure in their environment.

In terms of water conditions, Neon Tetras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. The water temperature should be kept between 20°C and 26°C (68°F to 79°F), which mimics their natural habitat in the Amazon River Basin. It’s also important to ensure good water quality by using a proper filtration system and performing regular water changes. Neon Tetras enjoy a planted tank with dim lighting, as bright lights can make them feel exposed. Including plants and hiding spots, like driftwood or rocks, will help create a natural, comforting environment for them.

When feeding Neon Tetras, offer a balanced diet of high-quality flake food, along with occasional treats like frozen or live brine shrimp and daphnia. Feeding small amounts twice a day is usually sufficient. Lastly, avoid pairing them with aggressive or much larger fish, as Neon Tetras can be easily intimidated or become prey. Peaceful tank mates, such as other small tetras, guppies, or Corydoras catfish, make the best companions.
