Peruvian Guinea Pig Maintenance

Maintaining a Peruvian guinea pig requires more effort compared to short-haired breeds due to their long, flowing coat. Daily grooming is essential to keep their hair free from tangles and mats, which can cause discomfort and lead to skin problems. Using a soft brush or comb, gently detangle their hair, paying special attention to areas prone to matting, such as around the legs and rear. Regular grooming sessions not only keep their coat in good condition but also provide an opportunity to check for any signs of parasites, skin irritations, or other health concerns.

In addition to daily brushing, it’s often necessary to trim a Peruvian guinea pig’s coat, especially around their rear end, to avoid soiling and make cleaning easier. Trimming can be done at home with small pet scissors or by a professional groomer. Bathing should be done only when necessary, as over-bathing can dry out their skin. When giving them a bath, use a mild, pet-safe shampoo and ensure they are thoroughly dried afterward to prevent chills. Clean their cage regularly, as their long fur can easily pick up debris. With proper care, a Peruvian guinea pig’s coat can remain beautiful and healthy, but owners should be prepared for the time and commitment required to maintain it.
