Pet Degu

A pet degu can make a wonderful and engaging companion for the right owner. Native to Chile, degus are small, social rodents that thrive in groups and enjoy interaction with both their kind and humans. Keeping a single degu is not recommended, as they are highly social creatures and can become stressed or depressed when isolated. When housed in pairs or small groups, degus can develop strong social bonds, displaying behaviors like grooming and vocalizing to communicate with each other.

Degus require a spacious cage with plenty of room for climbing, burrowing, and exploring. Multi-level cages with solid flooring are ideal to prevent injuries to their feet. Providing toys, chew items, and an exercise wheel helps keep them mentally and physically stimulated. In terms of diet, degus need a low-sugar diet consisting of hay, pellets formulated for degus, and fresh vegetables. Since they are prone to diabetes, sugary treats and fruits should be avoided. Regular handling and interaction help build trust with your pet, making them more comfortable and friendly. With proper care, degus can live for 5 to 8 years, making them a long-term commitment and a rewarding pet for those who enjoy active, intelligent animals.
