Ukrainian Levkoy history

The Ukrainian Levkoy is a relatively new and distinctive cat breed that was developed in Ukraine in the early 2000s. The breed was created by Elena Biryukova, a Ukrainian breeder who aimed to combine the unique traits of two existing breeds: the Donskoy and the Scottish Fold. The Donskoy, known for its hairless body, contributed to the Ukrainian Levkoy’s lack of fur, while the Scottish Fold, famous for its folded ears, provided the breed with its signature ear shape. The result was a cat that not only stands out for its appearance but also for its friendly and affectionate nature.

The development of the Ukrainian Levkoy involved careful selection and breeding to establish a stable and healthy breed with the desired physical characteristics. The first Ukrainian Levkoy kittens were born in 2004, marking the official beginning of the breed. Despite being relatively new, the Ukrainian Levkoy quickly gained attention in Eastern Europe, particularly in Ukraine and Russia, where it became popular among cat enthusiasts. However, the breed remains rare outside of these regions and is still gaining recognition in the broader international cat breeding community.

In terms of breed recognition, the Ukrainian Levkoy is acknowledged by several cat associations in Eastern Europe, although it has not yet gained widespread recognition by major international cat registries like The International Cat Association (TICA) or the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA). Despite this, the breed continues to grow in popularity due to its unique look and affectionate personality, attracting those who appreciate its exotic appearance and gentle temperament. As the breed matures and more breeders take an interest, it is likely that the Ukrainian Levkoy will continue to establish its place in the world of cat breeding.
